Program Details

Want to teach for Splash? Here's what you should know.

Times:

Splash 2019 will take place on Saturday, March 30, 2019, the weekend after we get back from Spring Break. Splash classes will run from 10am to 4pm, with a potential lunch periods at 12pm to 1pm or 1pm to 2pm.

Deadlines:

Teacher registration for Splash is now open! Registration will close on February 14th, 2018 at midnight! Click here to register! View your registered and approved classes here.

Teacher Meetings:

There will be a couple of meetings we will have in February and March to go over important information about teaching for Splash, as well as some tips for teaching. We will have a mandatory meeting to go over liability information particularly and also to go over lesson plans. Even if you have taught before, teacher orientation has lots of useful information! If you cannot attend this meeting, please email us at njitsplash@gmail.com. For more class-prep resources, check out the links we send you or shoot us an email. We’re always happy to help!

Location:

Splash is on the NJIT campus. In particular, we will have classrooms in GITC, Central King Building, Tiernan, and the Honors College. Teacher check-in (where you should sign in at least 30 minutes before your first class each day you are teaching) is in the Campus Center Atrium. This is also where we will have free breakfast (sorry, you have to provide for your own lunch, unless there are lots of student lunches leftover). We’ll have more information for you after you register a class. If you are traveling from a distance and would like to request a travel subsidy to travel to Splash, please let us know.

What To Teach:

Short answer: Anything! Longer answer: well, still anything, but if that’s not specific enough for you, we’d be happy to help you figure out what you should teach. Just don't do anything 1. illegal, 2. inappropriate, 3. dangerous (for example, requiring lab equipment or sharp implements), and try to use your common sense! We favor classes that require some kind of clear lesson plan ahead of time. If you can’t think of what to teach, you can see what other people are teaching by looking at our catalog, or check out the MIT Splash teaching advice page.

Class Supplies:

You have a budget of $30 to spend on each class section (or each hour of a walk-in activity). If you plan to purchase supplies, you should make a list of supplies at the level of detail you have planned so far in your class registration form under “Planned Purchases”. You can also request additional funds via email; we’re generally happy to extend class budgets, but you must ask us first. When you make your purchases, be sure to get itemized receipts for everything you buy. You can submit these receipts for reimbursement at teacher check-in.

What if something goes wrong?

Splash has a security hotline available during the program, and we will put up the number shortly. You should call this number for any issues within Splash, like if your room isn’t suited for your class, you have technology issues, you are running late, you are sick and can’t teach, you need a band-aid, or a student can’t find their parents (no need to call about registered students who are missing from your class). If there is a serious emergency, you should first call NJIT Public Safety at 911 (this will automatically reroute to NJIT emergency services) and then call the security hotline to let the administrators know what is going on.

Who should be in your class:

The only people who should be at your class are students who have it on their schedule, your one teaching assistant (if you only have one teacher for your class) and teachers who are registered on this website to teach it. Don’t distribute the location of your class before Splash, to your students or anyone else: anyone actually enrolled in the class will have the room number on their schedule.

Mass transit:

To get to the NJIT campus by mass transit, you can either take the Light Rail or the NJ Transit buses. If you're coming from Newark Penn Station, we recommend taking the light rail, which is much easier to use and faster (get Underground Fare tickets, $0.75).

For the Light Rail: we will have lots of signs around and volunteers helping people coming from the light rail. If you are coming from Penn Station (destination Grove St), or coming from Grove St, you need to get off at the Warren St/NJIT station; then walk upstairs and take the Lock St exit, and walk into the alleyway between the really big building with the construction and the athletic center. If you look straight ahead across the green, you should see a circular gray building, which is the Campus Center.

More Information:

We’ll keep a running log of information for teachers on this page, so if you miss an email or need to make sure you’re up to date, just check back here.
